Oh, Canada… Oh No! Fireworks and Furry Friends Don’t Always Mix
Canada Day is a time to celebrate with parades, fireworks, BBQs, and family fun — but for our pets, it can feel more like a nightmare than a party. Loud noises, unfamiliar guests, and tempting treats can turn July 1st into a stress-fest for your four-legged family members.
Let’s talk about how to keep your pets calm, comfortable, and out of trouble this Canada Day.🐾
🎇 Fireworks: Pretty for You, Panic for Them
To us, fireworks are dazzling. To pets, they’re terrifying.
Why? Pets have super-sensitive hearing. The loud bangs and unpredictable flashes can make even the chillest cat or dog bolt for cover.
How to Help:
- Create a Safe Space: Set up a cozy, quiet room with their bed, toys, and water. Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound.
- Play White Noise or Calming Music: This can drown out some of the booms.
- Stay Home if You Can: Your calming presence helps more than you think.
- Use Anxiety Aids if Needed: Ask your vet about natural calming products or medications.
Pro tip: Make sure your pet is microchipped and has up-to-date ID tags just in case they run off.

🍔 BBQs and Parties: Fun for You, Dangerous for Them
Nothing says summer like a BBQ — but those sizzling sausages and unattended drinks can spell disaster for curious noses and paws.
Common Hazards:
- Cooked bones (especially chicken!) can splinter and cause serious harm.
- Alcohol and cannabis edibles are toxic to pets.
- Corn cobs, onions, chocolate, and even grapes are big no-nos.
What to Do:
- Keep food and drinks out of reach.
- Let guests know not to feed your pets scraps.
- Have safe treats on hand so pets don’t feel left out.
Bonus: A frozen Kong or lick mat keeps dogs busy while you socialize!
👶 Guests and Kids: Social Overload!
Even the most social pets can get overwhelmed by a yard full of people. Kids running around, unfamiliar faces, and unpredictable energy can stress out your fur baby.

Keep things smooth by:
- Giving your pet a place to escape and chill out.
- Watching for signs of stress: panting, hiding, pacing, or growling.
- Asking guests (especially little ones) to respect your pet’s space.
